Day 1

Thursday December 1
drive San Francisco to Palm Springs 450 miles / 724 km

We get an early start on our 9+ hour drive. Typical early morning congestion getting through San Francisco to route 5, then things speed up nicely. Gas stops in Santa Nella and Lebec. 2 roadside rest area stops to pit, stretch and snack something  help to make the trip quite tolerable. Unexpected traffic in the Riverside area (how the area has grown!) but we move smartly into Palm Springs. All in all, we average about 55 mph – not bad!

5 pm attend City of Palm Springs Annual tree lighting
We arrive Palm Springs just in time to join the City of Palm Springs and Santa Claus for annual lighting of the city’s 22-foot “green” holiday tree, along with free cookies, hot cocoa and a few surprises. Celebrity tree lighters include Palm Springs City Council members and world champion boxer Tim Bradley. The fun goes on until 7 pm, but we enjoy a brief stop and head on to our accommodations. at Frances Stevens Park in the Uptown Design District on the corner of Alejo and Palm Canyon Drive near Palm Canyon Theater.  www.ci.palm-springs.ca.us.

7 pm stroll Villagefest downtown Palm Springs
Villagefest
eatery has been a favorite with locals and visitors for 25 years. Located in older part of downtown where many boutique shops make for a pleasant stroll. Chilly tonight but the charming vine-covered patio is heated and cozy.

stay Vista Mirage Resort
We light the fireplace, review the day, select tomorrow’s breakfast, take relaxing bath in the Jacuzzi tub before heading off to la la land. Wonderful day.
