Carson City +\u00a0Reno\u00a0Fun\u00a0Train + Sacramento<\/b><\/p>\n

8 am<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0breakfast\u00a0at hotel
\nOnce more\u00a0at The Grille. This morning we go with Classic Eggs Benedict:\u00a0Grilled English muffin topped with sliced ham, poached eggs, and hollandaise.<\/p>\n

9 am<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0depart for Reno Railroad Station<\/a> to board Reno Fun Train<\/a>
\n<\/strong><\/a>The Amtrak station, right next to Harrahs is across the\u00a0parking\u00a0from Aces ball\u00a0park. The station is a station, but if you are into history, come stroll down memory lane. The station itself is really bare bones. No concession stand, only a vending machine upstairs so bring your own victuals. The street level is old and looks old, but if you slow down and listen you might be able to picture steam trains coming through and hear clanging bells.\u00a0Speaking of pictures take the elevator to the platform level where Reno\u2019s train traffic history is told on the walls. You\u2019ll see wonderful pictures: steam trains and old diesel trains pulling into the station. The incredible Original Reno city drinking fountain<\/a> <\/span>is another little known piece of Reno history. Unique and beautiful, there are 3\u00a0levels, one for humans, a trough for horses, a little trough for dogs.\u00a0It is topped with 3\u00a0globes that might have lit the street.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

10 am<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0Sierra Scenic Snow Train leaves\u00a0for Sacramento<\/a>\u00a0capital of California
\nOur train is the weekday version of the Reno Fun Train. The trip is simply outstanding; service wonderful, weather picture post card worthy. There are priceless views and the majesty of the mountains to enjoy on the ride. Sierra winter weather was severe this year. Mountains look gorgeous with deep white powder throughout the canyons\u00a0and across the ridges. Today\u2019s light sparkles\u00a0the snow making it superbly beautiful. Our\u00a0trip gives a glimpse of travel by train over the Sierra Mountains in days gone by. California has much history of travel from\u00a0Reno along the Donner Pass and into Sacramento.\u00a0Coach level travelers receive a box turkey sandwich lunch. Very tasty and hits the spot. Those traveling in Gold Service dine with white linens in the more formal dining car setting.\u00a0You can bring your own snacks and beverages, if you wish. The Cafe Car offers popular beverages and snacks for sale. Also, the train features a Great Dome car and entertainment in the Piano Lounge Car. What a treat to do this.<\/p>\n

3 pm <\/span><\/strong>arrive Sacramento Railroad Station<\/a>
\nThis is the 2nd busiest station in\u00a0California, and 7th busiest Amtrak Station in America, with thousands of riders\u00a0a day and over a million passengers per year\u2026.and very convenient for us. We\u00a0exit the\u00a0train at the Sacramento Valley Station – I and 5th St. The California\u00a0State Railroad Museum and Old Town Sacramento are both just a very short\u00a0walk from the station.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

3:30 pm <\/span><\/strong>tour California State Railroad Museum<\/a>
\nMagnificent! Largest and most expansive railroad museum in the United\u00a0States: brings in visitors from around the world. Located at the western\u00a0terminus of the nation\u2019s first transcontinental\u00a0railroad, the Museum honors the\u00a0history of railroading in California and the west, but also contains\u00a0information, exhibits and activities about railroading\u2019s present and future. The\u00a0Pullman Car is set up to\u00a0jiggle like a train in motion \u2013 you really feel like\u00a0you are traveling on a moving train. There is a superb collection of very posh silver\/china services from many\u00a0of the train lines that ran in the past. Need a couple of hours just to make a quick\u00a0visit. Clever, fascinating exhibits at every turn.\u00a0In summer months, their\u00a0excursion railroad takes passengers on a leisurely journey along the Sacramento river.\u00a0So hard to leave.<\/p>\n

4:30<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0wine tasting The Underground Tasting Room
\n<\/a>We walk about 5 minutes from the Museum along the boardwalk\u00a0to this surprise located on the original level of the\u00a0city of Sacramento. From\u00a0somewhere below street level rises\u00a0the clink of wine\u00a0glasses and crinkle of chocolate wrappers. A flight\u00a0of stairs transports us\u00a0back to an\u00a0early 1800s\u00a0street corner, complete with surrounding brick, street lamps, bubbling fountain. Two local wineries make their home in this sunken\u00a0square where visitors lounge at bistro-style tables in the\u00a0courtyard, enjoying\u00a0an atmosphere reminiscent of quaint French\u00a0rural towns. Inside, we sidle up to a long bar for aromatic pours and impromptu\u00a0glass harp solos. Cheese\u00a0plates and succulent chocolates complement tall\u00a0glasses with their flavors.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

5 pm c<\/span><\/strong>heck into Delta King Hotel
\n<\/span><\/a>This unusual hotel and restaurant is a restored paddle wheel\u00a0steamer permanently moored to the dock. Love rivers and riverboats? Romance on\u00a0the water? Location? Then stay\u00a0here. Worth a special trip just\u00a0to spend a few days on board. Stroll down to Old Sacramento along the river.\u00a0People who like riverboats tend to like trains. Hear train whistles. All part\u00a0of Old Sacramento experience. A band adds to the River Boat atmosphere. We check out the bar. Nice views of the river and shore across the\u00a0way. Scenes painted on glass above the windows. Dark wood. Feels authentic\u00a0because it is!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

6 pm\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>dinner\u00a0Pilot House Restaurant<\/a> on-board Delta King
\nFun experience to dine on the docked river boat. Food good, service attentive. View\/ambience fabulous.<\/p>\n

after dinner<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0explore Old Town Sacramento<\/a>
\nOld Sacramento comprises about 5 blocks of restored late 19th Century\u00a0buildings, shops, theater, museums, restaurants, and public market. Early\u00a0history: Sacramento\u2019s waterfront location was prime\u00a0for commercial success, but prone to severe flooding. Repeated fires engulfed wood and canvas\u00a0buildings. In 1850, 1852 and again in 1862 the city was wiped\u00a0out by high\u00a0water which led to a\u00a0mammoth project to raise the city above flood level. Within\u00a0a few years, thousands of cubic yards of earth were brought in on wagons and\u00a0the daring scheme to raise the street level began. The original\u00a0street\u00a0level can still be seen throughout Old Sacramento under the boardwalks and in\u00a0basements.\u00a0All ages will find something interesting to\u00a0do here.<\/p>\n

\nRoom a bit tight, port hole style windows, ceilings low for tall folks like\u00a0us. Furnishings old timey riverboat Victorian style. Adequate bathroom. Bed, very comfortable. Recommend experience.\u00a0Puts you right into the action. Fall asleep fast after our\u00a0very busy day\u2026.and we\u2019re up early again tomorrow.<\/p>\n
