The\u00a0cocktail and beer program feature regional\u00a0boilermakers, craft beers and signature drinks. Freedom Beat is both a dining\u00a0destination and an intimate, state-of-the-art performance venue.<\/p>\n

\nFrom Richard Hooker, Cultural\u00a0Urbanist, we\u00a0learn\u00a0about Las Vegas as an enduring American West outpost, defined first by\u00a0its rail road history and then as America\u2019s first gambling Main Street. He\u00a0shows us what a million dollars looks like! We see\u00a0antique pianos and\u00a0furniture, beautifully carved\u00a0wood work, glass globes, fabulous stained\u00a0glass windows, in a number of casinos. Richard walks and talks very fast. We\u00a0trail behind focused on his last statement. If your mind wanders for a second\u00a0you\u2019ll need Cliff Notes to catch up!\u00a0Do this\u00a0or one of his other tours.<\/p>\n

9:30\u00a0am<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0leave\u00a0for\u00a0ghost town of Rhyolite<\/a>\u00a011:30\u00a0am<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0arrive and tour Rhyolite and Open Air Museum
\nThis\u00a0Nye County ghost town is in the\u00a0Bullfrog Hills, about 120 miles northwest of Las Vegas, near Death Valley’s eastern edge. Mining formed the town which ballooned very quickly to 8-12,000 people. At first, most business\u00a0was done out of tents. Eventually, two\u00a0train lines served the town, street\u00a0lights were strung, schools were built. A 4-story bank went up, a post office was added, 49 saloons flourished, and\u00a0various other businesses filled out the community. Between the crash of 1907 and\u00a0the mines playing out by 1909, the town lost its residents until only a handful\u00a0remained\u00a0– creating a real GHOST TOWN.\u00a0Today a volunteer caretaker oversees\u00a0what is left of the town. The grounds are too wet to explore the many acres by\u00a0foot, but that is\u00a0the best way to see and feel the ghosts.<\/p>\n

noon<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0depart for\u00a0Beatty<\/a>\u00a012:15 pm<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0lunch with Beatty cowboys\/gals\/floozies at Stagecoach Hotel Casino<\/a>
\n<\/a>Beatty is an unincorporated Town in Nye County established in 1904.\u00a0At the\u00a0crossroads of Hwy. 95 and State Route 374, it offers easy access to Death\u00a0Valley National Park but In\u00a0addition to ghost town exploration, off roading,\u00a0bird watching, hiking, camping, photography, filming, star gazing, geocaching –\u00a0the list goes on. We meet the Beatty Cowboys, Floozies and Petticoats – local folk who re-create Old West Gunfights and other events of that time to take us back to when the\u00a0\u201cWest \u201cwas \u201cWild\u201d. Before lunch cowboy hats and bandanas to get us\u00a0in the proper mood for what is\u00a0to come\u2026.a hold-up, arrest, escape and shoot-out. So much fun!<\/p>\n

1:30 pm<\/span><\/strong> depart for\u00a0Tonopah<\/a>\u00a03 pm<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0arrive and tour\u00a0Tonopah Historic Mining Park<\/a>
\n<\/a>Over 100 acres with\u00a0all buildings open to enjoy. This \u201cQueen of the Silver\u00a0Camp\u201d had 4 major mining companies here.\u00a0It\u2019s rich history is brought to life through preserved and restored\u00a0equipment and buildings, historic exhibits, video presentations, and a\u00a0self-guided tour.\u00a0The re-created underground Burro\u00a0Tunnel features a walk down a mine tunnel that intersects one of the ORIGINAL\u00a0discovery\u00a0STOPES. At the end of the tunnel we\u00a0step into a steel viewing\u00a0cage and look down a 500\u2019 deep stope. We\u00a0arrive in a rainstorm and cold howling winds. Unsafe to walk off the\u00a0main path but we\u00a0manage to see some major preservations and working\u00a0equipment and learn a lot about mining techniques developed in\u00a0the West and later adopted by mines worldwide. Need\u00a0another visit to learn\u00a0more.<\/p>\n

4:30 pm<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0check into Mizpah\u00a0Hotel
\n<\/a><\/span>This historic hotel opened 1907. A\u00a0member of\u00a0Historic Hotels of America,\u00a0it was a wonder\u00a0in its day. The 5-story building, first permanent city structure,\u00a0was tallest building\u00a0in\u00a0Nevada\u00a0until 1929.\u00a0Built of\u00a0reinforced concrete, faced with stone on front and brick\u00a0on sides and rear, it had steam heat and the first elevator in\u00a0Tonopah. It\u00a0was the social hub of Tonopah. Renovated and reopened in 2011.\u00a0From moment we\u00a0enter we\u2019re aware something happening here. Head spinning Victoriana-velvet Parlor sets for lobby seating, antique marble top tables, dark\u00a0woodwork,\u00a0vintage ceilings and lighting set the tone. We walk into\u00a0history and immediately meet inhabiting ghosts. A Mizpah ghost haunting\u00a0(\u201cthe Lady in\u00a0Red”) was featured\u00a0in season 5 of\u00a0Travel Channel Ghost Adventures.\u00a0Legend is\u00a0she is the ghost of a prostitute beaten and\u00a0murdered on the 5th floor by a jealous raging lover. Cline\u00a0Vineyards has created a wine \u2013 Lady in Red \u2013 to\u00a0honor her memory.<\/p>\n

6 pm<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0dinner\/beer tasting Tonopah Brewing Company
\n<\/a>We\u2019re ready for cold craft beer and slow-smoked barbecue in a clean,\u00a0friendly atmosphere. Tonopah Brewing is recommended so we are here\u00a0to verify!\u00a0Upon arrival we find the place in total darkness – storm related power outage. We are game to\u00a0eat and drink in the minimal light thrown off by a large candlelabra placed on\u00a0the table.\u00a0The IPhone lit menu is useless as the kitchen has very limited\u00a0capacity without power. We take whatever we can get under the circumstances and\u00a0do a Beer Tasting of 4\u00a0brews.\u00a0Living\u00a0up to its reputation \u2013 food great. Tried roasted chicken, ribs, pulled pork and\u00a0barbecued beef \u2013 all great!\u00a0Found\u00a0out they use old wine barrel staves for the barbecue fire\u2026which must add to the\u00a0meat\u2019s flavor. Good stop.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\nOur snug hotel room is comfortable with fast internet that makes it easy to stay in touch while on the road. Today we learned and experienced so much and we are very tired.<\/p>\n
